A Message to the Membership of Suffolk NYCLU

As you are already aware, a proposal has been suggested by two of the Suffolk Legislators (Brian Beedbender D- Selden and Jack Eddington WF-Patchogue) to require all persons who receive licenses from the county to inform the county of their workers status or lose their licenses and suffer other sanctions. We call it The Electrician and Plumber Unemployment Act.
The hearing on this bill is set for March 4, 2008.
The NYCLU is doing a hard press to stop this legislation from becoming a reality.

With your help we can stop it.

I ask you to contact your local legislator and let them know this is wrong and should not be passed. In addition, I have included (see below) particular points that you can inform your legislator on why this bill is bad for Suffolk County. Any one of the below are a good enough reasons to stop the proposal.

Please take a moment to review the point and incorporate in your email or calls or snail mail attempt to your local legislator. You can access the Suffolk County Legislators website to get information on all 19 officials including their email at www.co.suffolk.ny.us/legis/ . Thank you for your assistance.

Reference Points on The Electrician and Plumber Unemployment Act
hearing set for March 4, 2008

  1. This amendment takes money out of the hands and bank accounts of taxpaying business persons.
This bill scares employers and frightens them from employing anyone who looks or sounds different.
Employees will suffer because they will not be able to work.
  2. Suffolk County has regulations on the books to prevent bad business practices. The County should enforce the minimum wage laws, health and safety laws in the workplace, workmen’s compensation regulations. Suffolk County has these laws, agencies and monies already allotted to make business practices safe. Punishing business and workers’ (which this law will do) is bad business!
  3. This unfair and unpatriotic law is a further attempt to whitewash Suffolk County. This is discrimination. Such laws like these were subjected to three General Accounting Organization (GAO) reports where in all three it was found the discrimination and hatred ran wild in the wake of these laws.
