Dear Mr. Levy: I am writing to ask that Suffolk County pass a resolution defending the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is the core of our democracy; together these Constitutional Amendments establish the foundation of the freedom that we hold so dearly. This freedom includes speech, the right to associate, to confront charges and to be guaranteed the protection of due process. Although the PATRIOT Act contains needed provisions, it also contains several extremely troubling changes to law, including enabling courts that are intended for foreign powers to be used domestically, redefines terrorism to include civil disobedience, and provides our library records, medical and financial records to the government without notice or needed oversight. Democracy started on a local level and it will be secured during these difficult days on a local level. We need to make our town safer by providing training and resources to our firemen, our police officers, our law enforcement agencies and our town officials; undermining our Constitution is not the appropriate path. I ask that you please allow our county to join the 300 communities (including New York City) that have passed resolutions in affirmation of our freedom. I thank you for your consideration and your service to our community.
