Date: August 18, 2004

Dear Supporters,

Welcome to all the new members of the Suffolk NYCLU E-Newsletter. This newsletter provides information about civil liberties in Suffolk County, including messages from the Suffolk Bill of Rights Defense Campaign. We send emails no more than three times a month (and often less), and do so only when there is important news or direct action that you can take.

1). Suffolk Bill of Rights Defense Campaign

As Newsday noted in its Sunday edition, the Huntington Town Board is on the cusp of passing a Bill of Rights Defense Resolution. As the Campaign has taken off, we have obtained well over a thousand petition signatures, sent hundreds of letters to local officials, held a standing-room only educational forum, and drafted a resolution with town officials. The September 14th meeting is a make-or-break date; all the steps to create the groundwork for the resolution are in place and the Town Board has the lead-time to include the Resolution on its agenda. We need your help for the final push!

Huntington Residents: You can send a free letter to the Town Board, through our website, asking that they include the Resolution in their September 14th agenda at: http://www.suffolknyclu.org/billofrights/hunt.cfm

Suffolk Residents: As we wrap up our efforts in Huntington, we are beginning work on a Suffolk Legislature Resolution. You can read more about our efforts and Campaign, and send a free letter to your County Legislator at: http://www.suffolknyclu.org/billofrights/countyleg.cfm

2). Return the Light March Arrives at the Suffolk NYCLU

On August 26th, the "Return the Light" March will be stopping at the Suffolk NYCLU. The March is traversing from one end of Long Island to the other to call attention to threats to our rights and liberties. Many organizations are partaking in this nonpartisan effort, and the Suffolk NYCLU is honored to host a segment of the March to discuss the unconstitutional provisions of the PATRIOT Act. Here are the details if you can join us. We hope to see you there!

Time/Date: Tuesday, August 26th; Noon
Location: 150 Broadhollow Road, Melville, NY 11747 (Outside, back of building)

3). Next Door in New York City...

In two weeks, hundreds of thousands will descend on Manhattan for the Republican National Convention. In response to the overwhelming need for accurate information about the right to protest, the New York Civil Liberties Union has opened the "Protecting Protest Storefront," just two blocks from Madison Square Garden. The Storefront is non-partisan and will serve as a location for people to file complaints or provide reports about police activity before and during the Convention, and as a source of information about the legal rights of groups and individuals planning to protest. Please contact the NYCLU Storefront if you are interested in volunteering, and drop by if you need assistance or to learn more about civil liberties.

Location: 520 8th Avenue (between 36th and 37th Streets)
Hours: Aug 23-26, 10:00am-6:00pm;Aug 26-Sept 2, 8:00am-10:00pm
Phone: (212) 629-3011
